The AISG Protocol: Core Enabler of the RET System in Mobile Communication Networks

2025-07-16

Coverage range of base stations and network maintenance efficiency are common issues in mobile communication network construction and maintenance. An effective solution is introducing the Remote Electrical Tilting (RET) antenna system, which includes RET Control Systems (RCS) like base station systems and Antenna Linear Devices (ALD) such as Remote Control Units (RCU) and Tower Mounted Amplifiers (TMA).

To enable compatibility and interoperability between ALD devices and RCS from different manufacturers, the Antenna Interface Standards Group (AISG) launched the AISG protocol based on 3GPP specifications. It defines ALD-related standards and the Iuant interface. By adhering to these, RCS and ALD can be compatible, dock seamlessly, and form a complete RET system. Maintenance personnel can remotely monitor ALD devices via the network, improving network optimization processes and efficiency.

In the RET system, the AISG protocol is core, coordinating devices for efficient antenna regulation, similar to a conductor leading an orchestra.

(I) Remote control of electrical tilt antennas

AISG-compliant RCUs receive base station commands, adjust motors to change antenna downtilt, and precisely modify signal coverage. In urban areas with many high-rises, remote downtilt control avoids signal blockage by buildings, ensuring stable coverage.

(II) Multi-device compatibility and interoperability

The AISG protocol allows ALD devices and base station systems from different manufacturers to be compatible and interoperable. Any AISG-compliant antenna device can connect seamlessly with compatible base station systems to form a complete RET system, boosting flexibility in network construction and maintenance.

(III) Remote monitoring and management

Using the AISG protocol, maintenance staff remotely monitor ALD devices in the entire RET system. They can obtain real-time status info (antenna parameters, equipment alarms) of antennas in remote mountains or urban high-rises. Timely remote diagnosis and handling of issues enhance maintenance efficiency and cut costs.

As a key RET system specification, the AISG protocol has reliably supported mobile communication networks' efficient operation since its inception and continuous improvement. With advancing communication technology, it will keep evolving to meet new needs, driving the RET system and the entire mobile communication industry to higher levels.
